CHAPTER 18
Victoria left her suitcase and computer bag in the kitchen so she could return her dogsâ affection. Whether she left the house for a week or an hour, they greeted her like a long-lost hero. Their constant adoration and enthusiasm had no bounds and never ceased to amaze her. Her animals provided a steady source of pure joy in her life.
âYou missed me, sweeties?â She scratched Oliverâs back, rubbed Izzyâs head, and stroked Big Edâs ears. Myrtle, her smallest greyhound, and the alpha dog, rubbed against her like a cat.
Despite the dogs having free rein of the place, the house sparkled, thanks to the cleaning service. Victoria handed out treats before heading to her room, unpacking her suitcase, and changing her clothes. It was after midnight. The stress of rushing to the plane and then flying had tired her out, but the files beckoned. She made a hot cup of green tea with vanilla syrup, then entered her home office. She sat down at the gorgeous, handcrafted desk left behind by the previous homeowner, and logged into the FBIâs server.
Samâs email awaited, but another caught her attention. A response from her contact at the phone company. She hoped it would tell her the location of the call to the automated prescription line and give her a solid lead on Scottâs whereabouts. She opened that email first. If they could find Scott, sheâd have no reason to go through the background files. Assuming they found him alive and well.
She read through the response. The call came from an unregistered pay-as-you-go device. The tech department triangulated the location to a stretch of highway in Boston. Another dead end. Although, if Scott made the call, it meant that as of that morning, he was still somewhere in the Boston area.
She finished her tea and opened the email from Sam. Heâd attached the requested background files. Most would contain basic information from internet search engines: location of birth, known addresses, schools attended, employment records. But the FBI had programs to quickly pull the information together and access to sources outside of public records.
Sam had flagged Ethan Whiteâs file because he had a police record. Victoria clicked on the file and eagerly read through the details. Three years ago, a woman filed stalking charges and obtained a restraining order against him. It started after they went on two dates, and she told him she didnât want to be more than friends. Ethan began following her. She spotted him at a park where sheâd gone to walk her dog. When confronted, Ethan insisted his presence in the park was a coincidence. She came home from a night out with her friends to find him waiting in his car across from her apartment. On two different occasions, she woke to find heâd left a gift on her porch or in her mailbox during the night.
Ethan made no explicit threats, but that hardly mattered. Stalking victims lived in a state of constant fear, nervous and anxious about what their stalker might do next.
